Location: Steephill Cove, Ventnor & The Island
Old Lodge (beach 1/4 mile, shop, pub & restaurant 1/4 mile) is situated just over a mile south west of the Victorian seaside town of Ventnor and a short distance above the picturesque Steephill Cove. The cove itself is one of the Island's hidden gems. A traditional, unspoilt fishing bay and without road access, it nestles between rocky cliffs and smugglers' hideaways. Find your way down the pathways and you can dine on the freshest crab and lobster, or simply sit back and relax on a deckchair on the beach.
Ventnor itself is, for the most part, built on the steep hill leading to the beach. Retaining its original seaside charm, it makes for a great day out for all ages. Along the Esplanade you'll find cafes and bars, including the well-known Spyglass Inn. There are also some quirky and bespoke shops, an award-winning park and a paddling pool. For the more adventurous, sea and cliff walks can be found along the coastal paths, along with many outdoor pursuits including horse riding, fishing, cycling, paragliding, water sports and golf.
Meanwhile across the Island as a whole, there are numerous attractions for all ages. These include The Needles with its chairlift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and the iconic coloured sands of Alum Bay. You can also pay visits to Queen Victoria's favourite holiday residence Osborne House; to Blackgang Chine, the UKs oldest amusement park, to Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Tapnell Farm Park and Carisbrooke Castle. Or to the sailing towns of Yarmouth and Cowes. Whatever you decide, one thing is for sure: the Isle of Wight has plenty to offer.
