Mixed fortunes for Ventnor on July 4th
SEVEN WICKET DEFEAT FOR VENTNOR
Ventnor slipped to sixth place in Division One of Southern Premier League after a seven wicket loss to Calmore Sports at Loperwood Park on Saturday.
After Ian Hailes was dismissed for 19, Dineth Thimodya with 63 and Dan Cox (54) helped their side to 147-3 before a hat-trick from Calmore’s Mark Lavelle saw the visitors sag to 194 all out from 48.5 overs.
An opening stand of 76 set the hosts on their way and with Ben Johns making 73 and Aussie Evan Allaway 61 not out, they eased to victory with five overs to spare.
THREE RUN WIN FOR VENTNOR IN TIGHT FINISH
Stand out performances from two teenagers helped Ventnor’s second team to a sixth Hampshire League win of the season at Steephill in the tightest of finishes with Easton & Martyr Worthy on
Saturday.
Opening the batting, a splendid innings of 88 from young Sam Mills underpinned the home side’s total of 217-7 from 45 overs with Martin Blackman (35), Neil Westhorpe (39) and Aaron Hartup (20
not out) lending support.
The visitors’ response had reached 150-4 before opener Rhodes Franklin (75) became the first of three victims for Hugh Calloway. It was the return of 15 year old Oliver McQuillan to the attack for the closing overs that proved decisive with the result in the balance. Having claimed three earlier dismissals and with the last wicket pair ekeing out the handful of runs needed, the young seamer induced a nick to wicket keeper Ben Davies to give Ventnor a dramatic three run victory with one ball remaining.
McQuillan finished with an impressive 4-35 and Hartup 2-51.
FIVE WICKET WIN IN SENIOR CUP FOR THIRD TEAM
Ventnor’s youthful third team secured an excellent five wicket win over St Helens in Saturday’s Senior Cup Group match on the village Green. Kayton Evans was the pick of the Ventnor bowlers, taking 3-11 from eight accurate overs while there were two wickets apiece for Harrison McQuillan and Toby Morgan as St Helens were dismissed for 164.
In an impressive response, knocks of 54 from Alfie Toulson, 41 from Tom Noyes and 34 not out from David Paul led the visitors to victory inside 30 overs.
DEFEAT FOR FOURTH TEAM AT COWES
Jack Powell and Adam Goulding each made 49 and Jess Glover and Jack Charlesworth 27 and 21 respectively for Ventnor’s third team before Cowes came out on top in pursuit of 174 to win by four wickets in Saturday’s Division 2 fixture. Powell, Lucas Cotton and George Charlesworth each took two wickets Nick Dobson’s side.
