Three centuries in a day for Ventnor

THIMODYA HITS A TON IN COMEBACK GAME AS VENTNOR WIN AT LANGLEY MANOR

Ventnor produced an impressive all-round performance to secure a commanding 119-run victory at Langley Manor in Saturday’s Southern Premier League Division One encounter.

After being invited to bat first, the visitors suffered an early setback when Josh Carpenter was dismissed. However, Dineth Thimodya, returning after injury, and Dan Cox steadied the innings superbly, putting together a century partnership to lay the foundations for a competitive total. Cox was eventually bowled shortly after reaching a well-made half-century, but Ben Woodhouse’s side
remained firmly in control.

Alex Stogdon then injected momentum into the innings, smashing 12 runs from his first three deliveries on his way to a quickfire 30. At the other end, Thimodya continued to anchor the innings and reached a deserved century with around eight overs remaining. He was eventually dismissed for an excellent 110. Toby Noyes and debutant Ian Hailes kept the scoreboard moving before Hailes was caught behind, while Will Mew provided a strong finish as Ventnor closed on 235-5 from their 50 overs.

The Islanders made the perfect start with the ball as George Watts struck with the very first delivery of the innings and added another wicket two balls later. Archie Lucy also made an immediate impact, claiming two wickets of his own as Langley Manor collapsed to 2-4. Although a number of extras helped the hosts' cause, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Ethan Short inflicted further damage with four wickets, while Dan Cox claimed another and also contributed with a run out.

The New Forest side were eventually dismissed for 116 as a confident Ventnor claimed a maximum 22 point haul and moved to third place in the table.

BLACKMAN AND COOPER MAKE HAY AT STEEPHILL

More than 600 runs were scored at Steephill on Saturday as a fifth win of the season was enough to lift Ventnor’s second team into the top two behind leaders Burridge II in Hampshire League Division 2B.

Highlight of the afternoon on another superb pitch were splendid centuries for both Martin Blackman and Kevin Cooper as the home side amassed a formidable 327-9 against Hayling Island. In a marvellous partnership of 161, Cooper thumped 12 fours and 3 sixes in a fine 101 from only 90 balls, and after he was dismissed, Blackman went on to strike 10 fours and 3 sixes in a typically fluent
innings of 120.

The visitors made a decent fist of their reply with Williams and Martin 85 and 76 top scoring, but fifteen-year-old Oliver McQuillan dismissed them both as the hosts clinched a 50 run win ahead of
Saturday’s Hampshire League derby with Shanklin & Godshill at Westhill. Thanks are due to Graham Perks for sponsoring the game.

ISLAND LEAGUE

Newport’s first team defeated a youthful Ventnor third eleven by six wickets in Island League Division One at Middlemead on Saturday. Extras top scored with 30 in Ventnor’s all out total of 93 (Ash Brett 4-18) before Newport eased to victory, Steven Steinmetz making 49. Harrison McQuillan took 2-22 for Ventnor.

The scheduled Division Two match between Ventnor IV and Shanklin & Godshill III was cancelled after the latter failed to raise a side.

HUNDRED LEAGUE WIN OVER RIVALS

Dan Cox led the way with a quick fire 62 while Kev Cooper (31) and Toby Noyes (29) contributed middle order runs as Ventnor set Shanklin & Godshill a target of 177 in the Hundred League
encounter at Steephill.

The visitors had reached 62 without loss before man of the match Cox dismissed both openers to halt their progress. Oliver Gyomber and Aaron Hartup made further inroads as the hosts clinched a 36 run victory.

WELCOME LEAGUE WINS FOR JUNIORS

Ed Newton (33), Max Doorly (25) and Emily Southcott (20) impressed as Ventnor reached a challenging 151 from 20 overs in their Under 13 League match with Cowes at Steephill.

In an excellent all-round display, Monty Cornes and Joe Green each took two wickets for the hosts in in a confident 83 run win. Ventnor’s Girls team made it a double Under 13 success with an eight run win over Ryde Ravens in last week’s league game.

Newport came out on top by eight wickets in the semi final of the Under 15 Cup. Spencer Thompson top scored with 30 in Ventnor’s total of 78, but the visitors won comfortably with three overs to spare.

FRIENDLY VICTORIES

Chasing 195, Ian Hailes and Toby Noyes both hit half centuries in Ventnor’s seven wicket win over touring Shipwreck on Sunday, while a week earlier, Somerset side Priston were defeated by seven
wickets.

The club wish to thank Bill Nichols for sponsoring the Priston game and Andy and Joy Fletcher for their sponsorship of the Shipwreck fixture.
