Rain stops play!
VENTNOR CC REPORT – 16 MAY
RAIN FRUSTRATES VENTNOR
Ventnor’s visit to Old Tauntonians & Romsey in the Southern Premier League fell victim to heavy rain
at The Sports Centre on Saturday.
Ben Woodhouse’s side were invited to bat first in the Division One contest and after slipping to 29-2,
eventually posted 211 from 49.2 overs. Toby Noyes hit a run a ball 36 before Henry Edwards with 58
and Hugh Calloway (41) saw their team to four batting points.
That was as good as it got for the Islanders with the wet weather preventing any further play post tea.
HEAVY DEFEAT FOR VENTNOR SECOND TEAM
Ventnor’s second team must have wished the weather had done them a favour after a nine wicket
defeat to Burridge II in Hampshire League Division 2B at Steephill on Saturday.
The hosts’ two game winning start the season came to an abrupt halt after a poor batting display saw
them dismissed for just 105 in 34 overs with only Martin Blackman (39), Charlie Calloway (39) and
Neil Westhorpe (11) reaching double figures.
The visitors romped to victory inside 17 overs; steady rain followed but too late to come to Ventnor’s
rescue!
Thanks are due to Roy George and Heather Mills for their match sponsorship.
NARROW LOSS FOR VENTNOR’S THIRD STRING
Ventnor’s third team gave Northwood’s first eleven plenty to think about before the Park Road side
edged home by two wickets in Saturday’s Island League Division One fixture.
Tom Noyes underlined his promise with a fine knock of 52 and with James Curtis and Harrison
McQuillan each scoring 27, the visitors set the home team 157 to win.
George Griffith was the standout Northwood batter with 69 not out, holding the innings together as
wickets fell regularly at the other end to a Ventnor attack led by skipper Sam Read (2-23), Harrison
McQuillan (2-27) and Rafe Hawkins (2-56).
FIVE WICKET SUCCESS FOR VENTNOR FOURTH ELEVEN
In Island League Division 2, Reece Attrill with 34 top scored for Newport II in their total of 155-6
against Ventnor’s fourth eleven at Newclose.
Ventnor’s reply saw them clinch an excellent win by five wickets with seven overs in hand, captain
Nick Dobson making an unbeaten 51, Adam Goulding 32 and Nathaniel Wells 28.
Ellis Hinkley took 3-34 for the home side.
MIXED FORTUNES
On Sunday at Steephill, our Under 11 team won by 14 runs against Newport, while on Tuesday,
Ventnor’s Under 13 Girls side lost to Arreton.
Wet weather caused the abandonment of our Women’s League fixture with Arreton but in an
entertaining contest, a combined Ventnor and Arreton team beat Newport and Ryde in Tuesday’s
Under 16 girls League match at Steephill. Evie Bennett and Belle Norris both scored 33 for the hosts
in a 50 run win.
TON FOR COX
Dan Cox hit a splendid unbeaten 128 as Ventnor’s Sunday side defeated Singh XI by four wickets at
Steephill on Sunday, chasing the visitors total of 197. There were three wickets apiece for
youngsters Samuel Blaize and Lucas Cotton.
The Club wish to thank Margaret Hilsum for sponsoring the game.
