2021 Updates and Plans

I like many others seem to have spent the last year planning for events to happen only to cancel plans. The amount of advice from many sources to the Club was in fact very helpful even if my largest folder is Covid Cricket. We do look as though we will have this lockdown until the end of March so we thought we would try to give you some ideas of our plans for the 2021 season.

It’s tempting to say that there was no cricket in 2020 but in the end we did manage a couple of months of games. The seniors played in an Island competition ending on that sunny day at Newclose at the end of September. It was good to host some Island clubs who have not had the chance to play at Steephill for many years. The juniors also had two month of games with u15, u13 and u11 all having full fixtures and coaching sessions. Our thanks go out to all who made this possible.

We plan to go ahead with our AGM on Thursday 25th February. This will have to be organised as a zoom type meeting but we would like to have as many of you taking part as possible. All the paper work will be available to you in early February.

The committee has met every two weeks and we are very lucky with the quality of our members. The Finance Committee, under Alan Parker and Boo Fletcher have sourced grants, organised a winter let of the lodge, found funds and made sure that we have remained without debts

When the papers come out you will see that we have developed a number of groups to help run the Club, these are not formal committees but practical groups helping with one part of the Club. A good example is the Tuesday Group where we use to meet one Tuesday morning each month and do some of the more straight forward jobs which make our Club look better. I do wonder if the coffee and cakes was not the main reason for coming!

We had planned by now to have our junior coaching sessions in progress. We did start some before Christmas but all junior cricket is now cancelled. The Juniors hope to organise a virtual Junior Awards evening. Special thanks to the support we have received from the parents with making running these teams so much fun.

The Main Club Awards will be at the end of the AGM and the one for the senior players is still under discussion.

Cricket for the summer is under discussion by the SCPL, HCL and the IWCB already and a series of options are underway unfortunately the word covid league is often used. Good news for the 1st XI is that we have negotiated for an overseas player to join us for the summer. He is an experienced cricketer with a strong interest in coaching.

Finally a message from our President, Graham Benson.

This has, of course, been a very difficult and unexpected year for us all but I am pleased and proud to report that Ventnor CC has thus far ridden the storm and is ready for action as soon as a green light is spotted.

The ground looks good, the finances are being micro managed and remain intact and the enthusiasm and commitment of the players, the management team and those vital people who help us with maintenance and associated jobs knows no bounds…I sincerely thank you all.

We look forward to the return of sport as soon as the restrictions are lifted which is looking more likely with the arrival of vaccines for all…it will take a bit of time but we shall surely get there. Meanwhile stay well and take care all of you and we can only look forward.

Graham Benson President VCC
